The Children’s Creativity Museum
An innovative multi-media art and technology experience for children ages 2-12, the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco, California, nurtures creativity, collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking in children and families.
The museum encourages visitors to imagine, create, and share. To nurture creativity and collaboration, they shift the focus from conventional play to invention, from media consumption to media production. They promote collaboration over independence and engagement over isolation.
Three core beliefs form the foundation of the museum’s educational philosophy:
- Creativity does not happen in a vacuum.
- Innovation is not an event. It is a process.
- A community of diverse learners, thinkers, and doers is critical to building a creative environment.
Children and families from all backgrounds, communities, and income levels have the opportunity to work side-by-side to create a dynamic and creative learning environment. This provides an ideal platform for collaboration, inclusion, and the celebration of each person’s unique talents.
INNOVATION LAB – the challenge and fun of inventing
Do you need a machine that can freeze time so you can finish your homework? Or perhaps your school has flooded with JELL-O and you need something that can help to clean it up? Can you make a hat or move water to Mars? In the Innovation Lab, you can create all of these things—and more— while taking our Mystery Box Challenge.
The Mystery Box Challenge presents children with an age-appropriate prompt inviting invention. Just one catch: you can only use materials inside the box provided. Children are challenged to think in design terms. What does this invention need to do? How can I build it so it does that AND stays together? Throughout the process, kids tap into their critical thinking skills and can also develop their communication skills by explaining the steps they took to create their invention.
