Dr. Diana D. Woolis has over 35 years experience in the field of adult and work-based education including in policy development, program design, research, and ed-technology. She has published on innovations in learning in articles, papers, book chapters, and books. Prior to becoming Director of the Center for Professional Learning (formerly Center for Learning in Practice), she was co-founder and managing partner of Knowledge in the Public Interest, a social learning design firm that recently completed the sale of its intellectual property. Julie Kasper has an MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University and is a National Board Certified Teacher in English as a New Language. She taught in K-12 and adult education classrooms for more than 16 years, the majority of that time in secondary ESL classrooms in New York City and Tucson, Arizona. She served as Refugee School Coordinator for Tucson from 2014-2018 and joined the Center for Professional Learning (formerly Center for Learning in Practice) in the summer of 2018 to lead the Refugee Educator Academy initiative. In addition, Julie is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership as a University Fellow at the University of Arizona.

Yvette Gatilao Murphy is one of our representatives to the New York Headquarters of the United Nations. She has also previously worked with CE International as the Director of Education Diplomacy and Global Advocacy.

Elisabeth Shuman serves on the advisory board of the NGO Committee on UNICEF, which works to uphold the rights of children everywhere, making her a key representative of CE International. Justine Heckmann, who has served as a UN Representative in Geneva for CE International since August 2016, has dedicated her professional career to human rights and international cooperation. She specializes in child rights working with the NGO Terre des Hommes Suisse, managing projects with a focus on children’s education, protection and participation. Justine’s frequent presence at Human Rights Council sessions and meetings organized by the Child Rights Connect network ensures CE International has place in the critical conversations surrounding child rights.

Jill McFarren Aviles, CE International Senior Consultant, is the Founder/Director of McFarren Aviles & Associates, LLC, whose mission is to foster leaders in early childhood development. She has over 39 years of experience working in the United States, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East providing customized training, technical assistance, and coaching to early care and education staff, parents, government and non-governmental organizations. Her expertise includes developing and evaluating bilingual/multicultural early care and education programs, as well as curricula for trainers and educators.

Passionate about equity in education, Sarah Bracken has worked with diverse youth in public schools and non-profit programs since 2002. Before joining CPL (formerly Center for Learning in Practice) and the Refugee Educator Academy, Sarah was a secondary Language Arts and English Language Development teacher and instructional coach in Washington state, then Maryland, and finally in Alaska. She has a Masters in Teaching from The Evergreen State College and is Nationally Board Certified in English Language Arts. Sarah currently makes her home in Chugiak, AK where she spends most of her free time with her family hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing.

Oula Abu-Amsha is a former Syrian professor. She has significant experience in e-learning technologies, curriculum development, having spent 12 years at the Higher Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology in Damascus, as well as the University of Damascus and the Syrian Virtual University. She worked as a consultant for The World Bank, UN-ESCWA, and the French Institute in Lebanon and has been a visiting scholar in few Swiss universities since 2014. Since her exile in 2012, she became sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the Syrian students becoming refugees and missing out on their education. She started her activities in Education in Emergencies working with the World Bank education team and conducting research in Lebanon. From 2016 till 2019, she was the academic adviser of Mosaik Education (formerly The Jamiya Project), using her experience in educational technologies to lead the development of programs and support services specifically designed for Syrian refugee students in the Middle East. Before joining CE International, Oula served students and facilitators from Guyana to Myanmar as the Chief Academic Officer of Jesuit Worldwide Learning. She is also working with the INEE on the setup and the launch of a Community of Practice, open to all Education in Emergencies practitioners.
