Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights 2016 report launch in Geneva

ACEI’s Geneva representative, Cassandre Guibord Cyr, attended the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) 2016 report launch on 30 May at the UN Geneva headquarters. The report launch was also attended by NGO representatives from various nations.

The report shows how the OHCHR has made meaningful contributions along with other partners toward the advancement of human rights among member nations in 2016.  Highlights from the report that support children’s rights include strengthening international human rights mechanisms by various nations. For example, in 2016, nations such as Peru and Samoa adopted one or more of the optional protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), that further protect children from conflict and sexual exploitation and expand child voice so that children may directly report child rights violations to the Committee on the Rights of the Child. Work on treaty bodies also progressed in 2016 to further address, for example, inclusive education in the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the rights of children and migration among the Committees of Migrant Works and on the Rights of the Child. Finally, the report documents how nations are fulfilling their commitments to human rights through national laws, policies, and institutions; strengthening accountability systems; and monitoring.
