At Childhood Education International, we believe that social-emotional learning (SEL) is important in fostering student wellbeing and success. This March 3, we are celebrating SEL Day by highlighting the value of SEL and sharing some of our free professional development resources related to SEL and wellbeing.

Managing Emotions, Building Relationships, Making Decisions

SEL is the process of learning about and developing the knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary for understanding and managing emotions, setting goals, showing empathy toward others, building and maintaining positive relationships, and making responsible decisions.

Through SEL, educators can help create an environment where students feel safe and supported, and where they can learn and grow social-emotional skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

SEL in Serbian Schools

CE International recently concluded a two-and-a–half-year-long project supporting educators in growing SEL in their schools in Serbia. Through our Social Emotional Character Development (SECD) in Serbian Primary Schools project and in collaboration with partner organization the Center for Interactive Pedagogy (CIP Centar), we developed a handbook and guide focused on SEL/SECD in Serbia.

The guide, available in Serbian and English, provides a framework for SEL/SECD integration, outlining pathways for primary-level educators and schools to implement SEL systemically. The handbook, currently available in Serbian, offers engaging activities for families to use to build SEL competencies at home.

Both resources are available for free download in our Open Educational Resource Library. Further information about SEL and other resources are also available on the CIP Centar website. The videos below highlight aspects and learnings from the project.

Holistic Language Learning

Through the Holistic Language Pedagogies (HLP) Project, CE International’s Center for Professional Learning brought together secondary- and tertiary-level English language educators from Ukraine and the United States to learn about and apply holistic learning with their students.

Project participants were invited to co-create a compendium of resources sharing holistic learning activities other educators could utilize in their work. The resulting Holistic Language Pedagogies Compendium of Resources shares activities related to SEL, play-based learning, asset-based pedagogies, drama-based pedagogies, ice breakers, and more. It is also available for free download in the OER Library.

I just dream that social and emotional learning will be a part of this in every school... We need it in every school and every university.

[The Holistic Language Pedagogies Compendium] is a real treasure box not only for the project's participants, but also for my school and community colleagues.

As part of the HLP Project, educators from Ukraine and the U.S. presented a webinar series focused on a variety of professional development topics. The free webinars were presented to the public in English. The video below is a recording of the fifth webinar in the series, which focused on social-emotional learning and wellbeing.
